When it comes to sketching, I tend to use loose paper instead of a sketchbook. Why? Well, actually I used to have a sketchbook but there were numerous problems with it. Firstly, whilst drawing on one page I’d find that the opposite side was rubbing up against another page causing the whole lot to smudge everywhere. But even worse, I found that by using a sketchbook I frequently ended up in cafes or the library with nothing to draw on purely because I’d left the darned thing face flat on my scanner at home! Infuriating! Add to that the fact that the spiral binding always gets in the way of my hand and the slightly more expensive cost per page causing me to be a bit precious about sketches and you can begin to understand why I decided to stick with loose paper.
That is, until last week. For no real reason other than wanting to buy something at WHSmith that day, I bought a new sketchbook and it would seem that this purchase was what I needed to bring my DeviantArt page back to life! And I’m glad I did too because receiving comments on the sketches I post is really nice and encouraging. Here are few of the recent additions to my sketchbook which you’ll have seen already if you follow my Tumblr blog or DeviantArt page.
Innocent Smoothie
Innocent Smoothie was a sketch I did to go with a theme of brand names and products. It’s all the rage in Japan right now so I thought I’d give it a go! Actually there’s an innocent smoothie on my desk and I thought, how can I make this moe? The sketch was the result of that lol.
OS X Lion
OS X Lion was the next attempt at drawing a character that incorporated a product, this time the upcoming Mac operating system OS X. I felt that the marketing was so confusing on this release by Apple that it deserved a lion-esque cat-girl dressed up as an astronaut. Seriously, with Launchpad, Mission Control and Time Machine, OS X is turning into quite the sci-fi novel.
MS Monodam
MS Monodam was my celebratory sketch I did in Café Nero because that day I was told I’d be living in Chiba in Japan in August! It just so happened that only last week my good friend Kotaro had given me this exciting gift -
I figured, since the monorail is such a cool feature of the Chiba Prefecture, why not draw a gundam style robot?
Ayane’s shocking realization
The sketch of Ayane peering out of her Nintendo 3DS is the most recent one. Actually I was so excited about buying Zelda: Ocarina of Time on the 3DS that I really wanted to sketch a console themed pic. If you don’t know how the the 3DS works, the console uses 2 cameras to make 3d photos and can also sense ‘AR Marker’ cards. If it sees an AR Marker, it superimposes 3d characters on top of them and all with the correct perspective thanks to the 3d camera setup. Funnily enough though, I don’t actually own Dead or Alive: Dimensions, the game which Ayane comes from.
Well, that’s all for now! I’m quite excited about a number of art-related things that I have in the pipeline so I’ll report on them as and when ^_^
